Don't Mount The Shotgun Too Quickly
by Bill Mays

Champion clay target shooter and avid hunter John Kirby gives some expert advice on mounting and tracking the bird or clay target. “Many shooters mount the shotgun too quickly,” said Kirby. “When shooters do this they commit the cardinal sin of automatically pointing the gun on the target without pre-tracking and it becomes a dead gun, meaning you stop the swing of the gun. Kirby went on to say, “Another bad habit for mounting the shotgun to quickly is, the shooter will focus on the bead of the shotgun and not on the target. When this happens the eyes work like a camera and focus back in forth cutting down the focus time on the target.”

Shooters should track the bird with the barrel a little ways as they are raising the gun nice and smooth and mount the gun at or in front of the bird before pulling the trigger. If shooters follow this technique they will cut down shooting behind the target or game birds.
